When new people start contributing to MoodleDocs it would be nice if we added a welcome message to their talk page, something like http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User_talk:Tsala

Hi Chris,

I've added you as a watcher hoping you'd like to help with this

Sure, what do you have in mind? Greeting template with help links on their user page or Talk:user page?

A banner like Template: stub or a box like Template:Lesson or maybe that new translocation trick? Or all 3

I created a sub user page http://docs.moodle.org/en/User:chris_collman/WelcomeToMoodleDocs .

We want to be friendly, show where help is located, remind not a school site, when in doubt -page comment, language tips and thanks for helping the Moodle community.

Did not see Tsala's link until I posted my comment above. I think I am moving in the right direction with content.

I have played around with the WelcomeToMoodleDocs. I started off with Tsala link and did a copy and paste. While off on a tangent looking for how to insert a users name found GIST Support. This gives some great suggestions for possible roles. I created [[MoodleDocs:Particapate]] page, plus added a short * version to the WelcomeToMoodleDocs.

I didn't want to get sidetracked into a lot of special formatting, but focus upon the content. I did like the double columns. If we insert this as a template, the new user will not have to see all the formats. But I think I will change the double column part to a table.

Just realized the welcome does not include any instructions about adding information to the User:User page. So there is more to think about.

Suggestions welcome!

I created a WelcomeToMoodleDocs template. Finally figured out that Namespace would insert user's name.

I still want to get rid of the <div> kind of formats for a table format, but this works. I created some additional templates as per the Tsala model. Probably someone with some better coding can do one of those "Like this Chris" edits in just one Template.

But I do like the two column format which tighten things up.

Questions:
1.Can we create a Moodle Docs FAQ page (or Documentation FAQ, or Moodle Documentation FAQ) ? And add this to the Help template?
2. What do you think of the idea of a generic User for "how to" questions in the context of MoodleDocs, these are different than policy which should be on your usertalk page.
3. Where should the welcome be placed? On the user page or on the UserTalk page?
4. I could not figure out how to take the existing Help template and get it left aligned in either column. So I created a new template Helpc.

Chris, thanks a lot for http://docs.moodle.org/en/Template:WelcomeToMoodleDocs - it looks great!

To answer your questions:

1. Of course we can create a Moodle Docs FAQ page. (I like Moodle Docs FAQ the best out of your three suggestions.)
2. Sorry I don't understand the question.
3. The welcome should be placed on the user talk page.
4. Fine!

Thinking of non-English speakers being overwhelmed by a lot of information, I suggest that we keep the welcome to Moodle Docs page as short and simple as possible, i.e. only include the most essential links.

Hi Helen,
#2. I almost forgot myself. and failed to put in a link: http://docs.moodle.org/en/User:MoodleDocAnswers as a generic page for "How do I". Rather than policy questions which belong on your page. Probably overkill, too much information but you know I never mind getting a "no" or "this is the way we do it".

Did you see the http://docs.moodle.org/en/MoodleDocs:Participate page? I liked that idea so much, I re-edited it a second time for WikiFON.org, where we have an "older set".

Process. My assumption is that our MediaWiki code expert will be able to figure out how to automatically insert the template when the user is created in MoodleDocs? Maybe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_User_scripts/Scripts/Friendly ?

I forget, how does a user know they have a user page in MoodleDocs ?
